Myanmar Shan Village Washed

green herbal aroma, sweet flavors of honey wheat cereal and malt syrup

S795 cultivar fully ripe

This is a blend of coffees grown by local farmers in a few small villages in Ywangan Township, within Myanmar’s Shan State. The farmers in this area tend to have very small plots of coffee, and only each produces a handful of bags each harvest season. There are 20+ villages involved in this project, and the altitude at the farms is anywhere from a low 1100 meters, to 1500 meters above sea level. This is a fully washed coffee, and all of the coffee is delivered to a central wet mill where processing is performed in a much more homogeneous way than if each coffee were processed at home.

An herbal sweetness permeates from the ground coffee, likely tied to the Catimor cultivars that are part of this Myanmar blend. This kind of herbal sweetness is unique in South East Asia coffee growing regions, also found in Thailand, Vietnam, and Yunnan in China, etc. It’s not a common taste for Americans or Europeans, which sometimes downgraded the cup quality from these regions.

  • Due to political unrest and civil rights issues the coffee market in Myanmar is unsteady, although have a long history of coffee growing since 1885. After a 5-year USAID Value Chains for Rural Development project, in 2019, specialty coffee roasters finally can bring coffee from Myanmar to the global market.
  • This coffee is sourced from Sweet Maria’s, which is one of the early trader participated in the Myanmar project. They choose a more difficult path to help the small farmers in Shan State (rather than working with those large estates in Mandalay area), which results in this lot of coffee.
