Colorful coffee drying on rooftops in Yemen

Yemen is located in western Asia, across the Red Sea from Ethiopia, and has ideal conditions for coffee growing with its old growth forests, soaring mountains, soil, and consistent ocean mist. There are two prime “Mocha” varietals grown in Yemen, the Matari and the Sanani, which the former one is more premium.

This “Matari” is one of the few coffees from the growing regions surrounding the high-altitudes of Sana’a that was traditionally kept separate. This lot was secured through Fatoum Muslot, who took over the family coffee business started by her father back in the 1950s. Traceable source of Yemen coffee is difficult to secured, mainly due to the difficulties exporting from a country at war. Thanks SweetMaria’s team for taking the risk of making it out of the country.

Yemen’s history with coffee dates back to the beginning. According to some legends, coffee was first discovered in Yemen by a Sufi monk. In others, our beloved bean was first discovered in Ethiopia and soon brought to Yemen by a monk. Fighting for the origins of coffee plant become a never ending dialog of these 2 countries across the Red Sea. In current research, biological root of coffee plant is Ethiopia, but Yemen is the first country to cultivate coffee as crop and trade to the world. Hope that supplement will help solve some of the mystery of those legends.
