This is the first year Ethiopia runs the Cup of Excellence auction. The No.1 winning lot sold at US$185.10 per pound. The coffee from Sakaro washing station ranks No.26 in the competition. We sourced it from Blossom Valley Int’l of Taiwan.

COE is a proven platform that can successfully connect buyers around the world to farmers directly in origins. It has been running in a dozen of courtiers, mainly in America, since 1999. In the course of the competition each coffee is tested at least five times. Only those coffees that get high scores continuously move forward in the competition. The final winners are awarded the Cup of Excellence and sold via an internet auction to the highest bidder.

Sakaro washing station is located in Chelbiesa village in Yirgacheffe, part of the Worka Coop under Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (YCFCU). It has 12 fermentation washing channels and 171 drying beds. Coffee cherry are sorted, then sun-dry 21 days, before going to wash processing. Fruit skins are removed at this stage before going to wash channel, no fermentation is applied. After cleaning, the green beans will dry to 11.5% water content, in order to meet international shipping standard.

The signature citrus acidity of Yirgacheffe is not overwhelming in this coffee, you can taste other fruit flavor like grape, cherry and berry. Sweetness is also exceptionally good with honey and milk chocolate tone.
