Yunnan province in China is world famous for tea plantation, it’s believed to be the birth place of tea. Coffee was first brought to Yunnan Pu’er area by French missionary in the late 19th century. It’s not until 10 years ago, the growing region catch the attention of coffee industry, in particular Starbucks which has a big retail networks in China.
This coffee is coming from the Menglian town, southwest of Yunnan Province, bordering Myanmar’s Shan State to the south and west. It is the westernmost county-level division of Pu’er City, with altitude of 1300-2630m. The high altitude, volcanic soil and right amount of precipitation, high forest coverage makes Menglian a perfect place for growing coffee.
Babylon Coffee Estate is famous of honey process, which make them stand-out in the region starting from 2015. Although variety of the coffee is not completely traceable (believed to be Typica), the processing help giving a unique identity to this Yunnan coffee. The red honey process (marketing name: Brandy honey process) add a winery flavor to the cup, which carry all the way from aroma and fragrance to after taste. The signature tea tone ending is also obvious.
