It’s always not easy to truly understand the Region and Zone in Ethiopia when mapping the trademarked “Growing Region” (e.g. Yirgacheffe, Guji, Sidamo) over the map. What make things worst are the newly established Sidama Region in 2020, making it one of the ten regions in the country, on the same level as Oromia and SNNPR). That’s why you can find the winning list organized differently in first COE in 2020 and 2nd COE in 2021 (Top 30 winner list), and seeing more and more new Zone-Region names that originally blended into Guji or Sidamo growing region.

West Arsi is close to Bale Mountain National Park, has very high altitude farms up to 2600 metres. They produce some truly unique Ethiopian coffees that were previously blended and sold as Sidamo. There are 5 coffee from West Arsi that can enter Top 30 in 2021 COE. Some roaster even found that coffee from Nensebo woreda has a very interesting new profiles with notes of blackcurrant, blueberries and candied plums with a touch of violet, much like the SL28 from Kenya. Pay more attention to this region down the road – West Arsi.
