Chelchele is a washing station in the Banko Chelchele kebele within Gedeb Woreda, not far from Yirga Cheffe town. The wet mill buys coffee from more than 1000 growers in the surrounding region, most with less than 1 hectare of coffee planted near their homes. These are what we consider to be “small scale” farmers, and coffee is usually only one of several subsistence crops grown.
The landscape in this region is dramatic, and very high, with altitudes at the farms ranging from 1900 to 2200 meters above sea level. The cold weather and thin air that comes with high altitudes slows the rate of plant maturation, leading to a very dense coffee bean, and also can affect the size of the beans. You’ll see some small beans in this lot, the smallest being 14 screen. Dense coffee has a higher potential for sweetness and acidity too. This is a fully washed coffee, with fermentation times between 36 and 48 hours, and around 2 weeks to dry the coffee.
