Ugada Sipi Falls Anaerobic Natural

orange blossom, dried-fruit, spicy ceremony, chocolaty

In the Sipi Falls region of Eastern Uganda, “coffee is everything.” Under the Sipi Falls Project by Kawacom, high quality Arabica coffee is grown near Mt. Elgon, an ancient volcano on the border with Kenya, where steep slopes and cooler weather make it the perfect coffee growing climate. The project was initiated in 1999, begining with an impressive 5,000 small holder coffee farmers with an average of 0.5 ha each under coffee. Coffee grows at altitudes ranging from 1,300 metres climbing up to 1,900 metres. Different varieties have been grown, including the famous Kenya SL28, Bourbon and Catimor.

In 2002, the project received its very first Organic certificate – an accomplishment that has, over the years, attracted UTZ, JAS and Rainforest Alliance certification schemes. Today, the project has expanded significantly, thanks to these successes, and reaches over 10,000 small holder farmers, many of whom not only receive higher prices for their higher quality coffee but also participate in other social and environmental programs and cash management project. This lot is a catimor variety coffee, which many roaster doesn’t like it’s herbal ending, generally regarding as a sub-standard arabica variety. But with the dedicated processing, like the anaerobic fermented, flavors improve a lot. I would even suggest light roast for this coffee, as the orange blossom taste is quite oustanding.
